Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Nancey Cummings

LofLM CoverOn #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Nancey Cummings.

Tell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!

I started writing erotica on a dare with my friend, Abigail Myst. I’ve read the genre and always wondered if I could do that. Writing explicit sex scenes is surprisingly difficult. There is nowhere to hide on the page. Over a bottle of wine, we decided to take the plunge. We made a list of bang-able monsters and scenarios and literally rolled a dice to find out what we would be writing. I got job interview with a lake monster, which is my first story, The Lady of the Lake Monster. Abigail got camping with Frankenstein’s Monster, which became Slut of Frankenstein. We wrote both stories at my kitchen table, while consuming lots of tea, popcorn and wine (not at the same time.)

What surprised me the most was how much fun it was writing monster erotica, so I carried on. My next story was Prisoner of Pan’s Desire Part One and Two, which features a super villain who was mutated via lab accident into a satyr. I’ve long thought super villains were more interesting than heroes and my main character, Dora, grows to appreciate a truly bad boy.

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?

I like “monster erotica”. It’s a good term, accurate yet broad enough to encompass variety. I also like “monster porn”, which is brazen, just how I like my smut.

If there was no such category as monster erotica, what would you call your work?

Probably erotic science fiction/fantasy or erotic paranormal.

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?

I’ve always found the villains and monsters to be more interesting than heroes in stories. Heroes are dull. They only react to events. They’re never pro-active. Villains, though, they are men forging their own destiny and bend the world to their will. Who really has more power: Superman trying to stop Lex Luther’s latest plan or Luther who makes Superman leave his date with Lois to rescue a bus full of orphans? What is it like when the man who can make the world take notice, takes notice of you? I just want to melt, the idea is so hot.

When it comes to classic monsters, I like a powerful creature to have a moment of tenderness or passion.  My monsters do tend to be more human than beast. I should push at my boundaries though and let things get hairy with some really funky monsters.

Favorite sexy beast?

Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!  It’s the best of both words: the sexy mad scientist and the lusty brute. I’m a complicated woman. I want to be intellectually stimulated and then stimulated so hard I can’t walk the next day. Plus, lab coats are sexy.

What else do you write?

I like blending genres. Boundaries are made to be tested. Mainly I write science fiction and adventure but I dabble in mystery and horror. When it comes to a story, I throw a little bit of everything I like in the pot and let it simmer. I’ve always loved the Toni Morrison quote, “If there’s a book you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.” I want to write the type of books I love with quirky humor, adventure, steamy and meaningful sex, genre blending, time travel, romance, pirates, monsters, ghosts, spooky houses, lost treasures, grim seriousness and not-so-serious business.

My next erotica project is more noir and pulp inspired, full of wicked women and rough men. My current non-erotica project is a horror story revolving around a small town unspeakable-spider-elder-god cult.

Kiss/kill/marry: Bigfoot, a Grey alien, the Loch Ness Monster

Kiss Nessy because I’m only monster bi-curious. Sorry, girl. I am really torn between Bigfoot and the Grey Alien. Bigfoot is warm and good for snuggling but the Grey can take me on an interstellar adventure.  As much as I think Bigfoot is better in the sack, I have to put him down, after a thoroughly debauched last hurrah.  Marriage with the Grey Alien is purely political. I want the stars and he can give me that. All that probing would be fun.

What’s the best writing advice you ever heard?

I am in constant fear of sounding like an arrogant fool when talking about writing advice, but here goes:

Every time I sit down at the keyboard, I remind myself of the fundamentals: show, don’t tell; no qualifiers; the story starts on the first page, not page twenty; never use three words when one will do; if you show a gun on the mantle in the first act, then it must go off in the third; and, finally, revision, revision, revision.

I also believe that many people say they want to write a book “someday.” Someday will never arrive. Do it now. Be shameless. Make mistakes. Use all the clichés and cardboard cut-out characters, just write because writing a bad rough draft still leaves you with a rough draft.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Thank you inviting me to be interviewed on your site. This was fun. I appreciate the opportunity to discuss my writing.

Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Morgan Lockheart

morganlockhartOn #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Morgan Lockheart.

Tell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!

My first book, Jungle Tentacle Lust is my take on the classic tentacle rape theme, thanks to a sentient plant monster deep in the Amazon rain forest. I love the idea of having one creature that’s able to satisfy every part of your body at once and the thought of being wrapped up and penetrated by slithering vines made me shiver while writing it. I followed it up with Lover of Dragons which features my favourite mythical being, no prizes for guessing what that might be. I wanted to tackle a ‘classic’ monster and what is more classic than a big, fire breathing dragon? I think they’re terrifying and deeply sexy at the same time although the size difference made for interesting writing!

My latest story, A Desire for the Dead is about zombies. Perhaps it’s their relentless nature or their vast numbers but I always find them a little bit erotic. Being overwhelmed by a crowd of them just makes me tingle.

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?

I like the term ‘monster porn’. Although I will use the erotica tag on the things I write, it’s not one I’ve ever really liked. Porn is far more direct and honest and, let’s face it, ‘monster erotica’ is quite a mouthful and not in a way I would normally enjoy. Plus I just love it when people ask what I do and I respond by saying ‘porn’ nice and loudly. The look on some peoples’ faces is just priceless.

If there was no such category as monster erotica, what would you call your work?

Before I discovered monster erotica, I tended to refer to my ramblings as ‘Dark Fantasy’ which is a term I’ve seen used a few times. Here in the UK, anything slightly risqué gets labelled ‘Adult’ so perhaps you could say I’m a writer of Adult Beast Fantasies? Hmmm, sounds slightly perverse doesn’t it? Maybe I should get business cards printed up with that on…

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?

I have tried both reading and writing ‘conventional’ porn but I’m afraid that a lot of it bored me senseless. I am a big lover of sci-fi and fantasy so when it came to writing my own material, I knew I had to write in the same genre. There are just so many possibilities within the realms of fantasy that lie beyond our conventional world, it was too tempting not to indulge myself.

I think the main appeal of these stories is that they are safe. Unlike something like a rape fantasy, there’s no real danger of a dragon carrying me off to ravish me or a band of orcs turning me into their slave. Fantasy has always been a safe place for people to explore their sexuality free from judgement or condemnation and I think monster erotica caters to that. Whether it is through the character actively seducing a raging monster or allowing themselves to be used by the beast, I think it gives a much broader scope for sexual encounters than you would find in mainstream media or conventional porn.

Favorite sexy beast?

Oh so many to choose from, I wouldn’t know where to start! Ok, I think if I had to pick one, I’d have to go with a demon. It’s not just the horns or the hooves, I think there’s something about a creature that wants to corrupt you from the inside out, maybe even turning you into one of their kind. I do so love the idea of being corrupted in mind and body. If I had to pick a more ‘classic’ monster, then it would have to be a dragon or a centaur.

What else do you write?

I’m currently hard at work on my first series of books following the same character, a shape-shifting succubus. I’m aiming for them to be shorter and more indulgent and to satisfy my craving for transformations and futa porn. Hopefully people will enjoy reading them as much as I will writing them.

Outside of naughty stories, I also have two full length novels that I’m busily editing, one a supernatural thriller and the other a crime drama. They’ll be published under a different pen name though as I like to keep businesses separate.

Kiss/kill/marry: Bigfoot, a Grey alien, the Loch Ness Monster

Aw, Bigfoot is adorable so he gets a big kiss from me. I’d love to hang out with him in the woods and relax miles away from anyone else. However, he’d lose out to Nessie in the end who I’d have to marry. Loch Ness is beautiful and I’d adore living there and going swimming with my giant monster lover. When I was younger I used to have nightmares about being abducted so I’d have to kill the Grey even if they could take me to the moon and back. That said, they do like their probes..

What’s the best writing advice you ever heard?

I started as a screenwriter and the best piece of advice I ever learned was from reading the essays of William Goldman: ‘Write the damn thing’. It sounds simple but it’s so true. Once you have something written down, even if it’s terrible, you can work with it, shape it and mould it into something better. Until you have words on paper, you’ve got nothing but ideas in your head and there are thousands of people out there with them.

Since I started writing and self-publishing, I’ve lost count of the number of people who say ‘oh yeah, I’d love to write a book’ but never have. The people who actually do are few and far between. For me, that’s the difference between being a writer and being a dreamer.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Thanks for inviting me to be interviewed on your site, it’s a great honour.

I love being part of the erotic literature community and I am proud of both the writers who weave strange new worlds and the readers who want to journey with us. Creative, liberated people are the future so keep reading, writing, dancing, drawing, whatever gives you and those around you pleasure because you rock. Oh and as two very bodacious dudes once said, “Be excellent to each other!”

Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Celestia Dew

greek lustOn #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Celestia Dew.

Tell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!

I started writing within Greek mythology because there was a lot of sex and violence already there to elaborate on, and the next thing I knew I was writing more and more.  I have two original stories and two based on actual Greek myth: “Leda and the Swan” and “Europa and the Bull” both of which involve Zeus turning into animals for seduction purposes, which I always thought was a little weird, but clearly I’ve run with it.

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?

I like “monster erotica.” I like to think there’s more flare to the stories than just straight up porn, and it IS classic literature, after all. 🙂

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?

It’s fun and different. It’s bold–not just anyone can write it and do it well.

Favorite sexy beast?

Satyrs, fauns, centaurs–the creatures related to Dionysus are all terribly sexy.  Also that combination of man and beast, all hairy and feral…yeah.

What else do you write?

Everything I write is fantasy based.  I’m between projects right now, but I’ve been playing with the very interesting implications of fairy tales, specifically Jack and the Beanstalk and Red Riding Hood.

Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Helen Atreya

???????????????????????????On #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Helen Atreya.

Tell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!

Alien Brood is by far my most popular series.  It features the Tnocia, a race of aliens who resemble octopuses with a few notable differences: they have dozens of tentacles, and to finish gestating their eggs they need a willing, mammal host.  Stranded on our planet by a mysterious accident, they’ve had to form bonds with some (lucky!) human women to ensure the continuation of their species.

The series starts out with a haunted house style story: Mia, who is the main character through all five books, takes a maid job at a rundown mansion in the middle of nowhere.  Soon she realizes that there are strange things going on there, and she is quickly entangled in the Tnocia’s desperate struggle for survival.  Along with Lexxi, her newfound alien lover, Mia and the other women of Hawthorn Manor hatch a sexy and at times harrowing plan to secure the aliens’ survival.  Along the way there’s plenty of lesbian and alien sex to be had!

Alien Brood was also my first try at the “alien impregnation” sub-subgenre, which was something I had never really seen myself writing.  Once I got into, though, I definitely understood the appeal!

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?

Monster erotica, definitely!  Porn has the connotation that it’s exclusively about the sex, or that the only point is the sex, and that’s just not what I write.  There is sex featured prominently, of course, but always in service to the story, the characters and ultimately their relationships with one another.

If there was no such category as monster erotica, what would you call your work?

Hentai Novelization!  Probably not, but hentai is where I draw a ton of my inspiration and visual references from.

That said, I don’t think we’re in any danger of the monster erotica category going away any time soon.  The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife is two hundred years old and I doubt it was the first time someone was turned on by the idea of women and horny monsters together.

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?

Why do some people like feet, or whips?  Monster erotica is most definitely my kink and there’s no way around that.  I also find writing extremely satisfying, both the act of doing it and then putting it on display for others to enjoy, so I suppose that makes me a bit of a monster erotica exhibitionist!

Beyond that, erotica is one of the few genres where people will actually buy and read shorter pieces.  Most of my stories are in the ten to twenty thousand word range but there are a lot of erotica authors getting attention in the 5 thousand range, too.  That reality fits very nicely with my short attention span!

Favorite sexy beast?

Tentacle monsters!  They can do so many different things to you all at the same time!  All of the fun of a threesome (foursome!  more!) with none of the hassle of having to go out and find those extra people.

What else do you write?

Including Alien Brood, I have 16 stories available on Amazon right now.  Most of them are of the monster erotica variety, but there’s also Fangbang which is a vampire “menage” (I hate that word, but it seems to be the delicate way to say gangbang) story and Who’s Watching, which actually involves nothing fantastical whatsoever!  It was also my first story to get hidden by Amazon’s adult content filter, probably because the cover has two people on the front actually touching each other (oh no!).  Sexy Commutes was a fun one; it’s two stories about different women finding sexual liberation by having sex in the middle of rush hour (on a train and on a gridlocked highway).

Kiss/kill/marry: Bigfoot, a Grey alien, the Loch Ness Monster

Put Loch Ness in a nature preserve!  There only seems to be one of her, we need to make sure that she doesn’t go extinct!

Bigfoot definitely needs kisses and cuddles!  He’s just so big and sad and fuzzy, like some kind of forbidden teddy bear.  That’s not the sort of thing to base a long-term relationship on, though.

That leaves the Grey.  Between the probing and the abduction, I’ll bet they’re into all kinds of freaky sex… I would definitely fuck his brains out, then steal his spaceship and leave him naked and asleep on the side of a desert highway.  Because, you know, spaceship!  Also: I’m not the marrying type 😉

What’s the best writing advice you ever heard?

I only heard part of it, but there was a segment on NPR a few months ago where this very proper-sounding British linguistics professor spent a half hour or more cursing out Strunk and White, basically breaking down every “rule” in that damned book and explaining not only why the rule was crap but also how Strunk and White constantly broke the rule themselves, sometimes even in the same chapter!  So, “The Elements of Style is horseshit and everything you learned about grammar in college is wrong” would be my favorite writing advice.

That said, I’ve been rejected by every Publisher I submitted to… so, maybe don’t follow my writing advice 😉

Anything else you’d like to say?

Go have some fun sex!  Life is too short to for missionary.

Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Leigh Wilder

dc07e213c877b888462743e1cb5daecc2f17da83On #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Leigh Wilder.

Tell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!

I write primarily fantasy and paranormal romantica, but lately I’ve been very into dragons. In my first dragon story two lesbian dragon slayers have to sexually appease the beast before they can slay it–I call it “A sweet coming of age lesbian romance–with dragon cock.”  In the other one the dragon is a shapeshifter that transforms from human to beast mid-sex. It’s a lot of fun.

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?

I guess I write “beast romantica” though I do have an older story that is pure porn–“The Summoner and the Satyr”

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?

Giant cock. (Yeah, really.)  Also, I think sometimes I want to read about rough sex, sex the character might not think she wants, and somehow it seems morally more acceptable with a non-human character.

Favorite sexy beast?

I find a lot of sexual appeal in unicorns, but I haven’t written one of those yet. One day.

What else do you write?

Lots of fantasy and paranormal. A handful of contemporary erotica, but I’m really moving away from that genre and into the fantastic.  I write a lot of M/M, but also M/F and F/F. I’m very eclectic.

Kiss/kill/marry: Bigfoot, a Grey alien, the Loch Ness Monster

Kiss: Nessie Kill: Bigfoot Marry: Grey Alien

What’s the best writing advice you ever heard?

“Don’t write what you know; write what you want to learn.”

Anything else you’d like to say?

Just thanks for having me! This was a lot of fun.

Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Amanda Clover

On #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Amanda Clover.

interviewTell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!
When it comes to monsters, the whole bestiary is open. I’ve used werewolves, werebears, unicorns, demons, goblins, orcs, trolls, beastmen, slimes, vampires, and I could go on, but I think you get the idea. I’m not tuned into any particular monster, I just enjoy the genre.

My biggest monsters series is my ongoing Princess to Pleasure Slave series. Each story is standalone but set within the same fantasy world, so there are elements and even characters that sometimes carry over, but you can pick up any monster that intrigues you and start there. The protagonist of every story is a different young princess, sometimes innocent, sometimes tough, who finds herself in a situation where she has sex with a monster. Some of these situations are darker, with a truly monstrous creature, but others are romantic or even funny.

I have also written some choose your own adventure style erotica and a couple of these have centered on monster sex. Escape the Monster Breeding Grounds presents many different paths as the reader guides a princess through a dangerous forest where she will encounter everything from trolls to demons and werewolves. There is an element of danger as well as some twists and turns where the reader can choose to make some of the monsters allies of the princess or even join their culture.

Another monster-centric choose your own adventure story is Your Naughty Playmate 2 – Succubus Fantasy, which offers the POV of a modern day man who discovers a spell to summon a succubus. This one is simpler than Escape the Monster Breeding Grounds, but there are still a lot of possibilities and I tried to make the sex seem very interactive.

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?
Monster erotica is what springs to mind. Either that or, “that stuff I write.”

If there was no such category as monster erotica, what would you call your work?
Bodice gnawers.

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?
The appeal is the power dynamic of sex with something dangerous coupled with the ickiness, that taboo that it is sex with something inhuman. I adjust those aspects depending on what sort of erotica I am writing. Sometimes I will write a goo-spattered fuck fest that might appeal to men as much as women. Sometimes it starts out rough, but becomes tender as the monster and maiden see the good sides of each other and communicate through their lust. Yes, a woman can fall in love with an orc. Sometimes I want to write the closest thing I can to taboos. Shifters and centaurs in particular get into that territory. Just “wrong” enough to really get the reader’s attention.

Favorite sexy beast?
The favorite of readers seems to be orcs. They’re a well-defined fantasy creature that has appeared a lot in recent pop culture. They’re less bestial than many other monsters and, importantly, they can talk and allow you to tell a story in a familiar way.

Orcs are fun, but not quite my personal favorite. I’d have to go with something really weird like an insect monster or something. I have to research it to make it seem believable. Maybe add a twist that will surprise the reader. Because it is unfamiliar, it gives me a lot more freedom and the alien nature of it can make for an erotic horror angle. 50 Shades of Cronenberg.

What else do you write?
I write plenty of vanilla erotica with a little kink thrown in. Maybe it’s about a guy who likes bareback sex and won’t pull out or a woman who uses her good looks to get ahead as a reporter. I’ve written a lot of lesbian erotica, usually with an emphasis on older women and younger women relationships. I’ve written some cuckolding erotica. I just dipped my toe into the micro-genre of super heroine peril and I have a short series and another choose your own adventure planned with that. There seem to be a couple of very good, prolific writers doing heroine peril, but not a lot of variety. I think I can tell some fun stories about the friendships of women super heroes while still giving the “peril” that the readers want.

Kiss/kill/marry: Bigfoot, a Grey alien, the Loch Ness Monster
I’m going to have to kill the Loch Ness Monster. No one would believe he was real if I didn’t haul him in to the fishery and pose next to him.

I’ll kiss bigfoot. He seems like one night stand sort of material. A big, strong mountain man, but I bet he has the worst breath when he gets up in the morning. So maybe not kissing, just sex.

The grey alien gets to put a ring on it. He seems like he would be really creative in bed. Lots of mechanical arms and little spinning energy toys. Plus, you know he is rich with that UFO. If he wants to get experimental, I am GGG.

What’s the best writing advice you ever heard?
The old cliché of “write all the time.” If you’re not writing, you’re not getting better. Learn the fundamentals and then forget most of them. Do it your way or there is no point in doing it at all. Don’t listen to platitudes. Like mine.

Anything else you’d like to say?
Thanks for the chance to talk about my erotica. I spend so much time writing that I often feel like I’m not really fitting into the larger community, but I really enjoy and respect my fellow writers. There are some very talented, very dirty people out there. I’d love to collaborate with some of them or participate in an anthology or something.

Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Justine Geoffrey

On #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Justine Geoffrey.

blackstone_PRIESTESS_cover175pxTell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!
I’ve got two series going at the moment. The first is BLACKSTONE, which is a long-form narrative that pulls inspiration from the “weird fiction” of the 30s and 40s and pulp authors like H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. So the monsters are all either mutated, insane cultists or nameless squidgy god-things from beyond Time and Space! There’s lots of dark magic and strange things going on, rituals and summonings and so on. There’s four books in the BLACKSTONE series so far; two longer novels (Red Monolith Frenzy and Green Fever Dream) and two short pieces (Summonings: Anicka & Kamil and Summonings: Yvette’s Interview) that fill in some of the back story for the main books.

My other series is a gonzo sci-fi exploration of gender and alternate sexuality. So far there’s only one book in it, though I’m working on the second. It’s called Orgy in the Valley of the Lust Larvae. The monsters in it are, naturally, “lust larvae”. I won’t go into more detail. It’s a little bit hentai, a little bit futa, and a whole lotta fun, or so I’ve been told!

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?
I like “weird erotica” as opposed to, say, paranormal erotica or other names, because it leaves me open to experiment and not get locked down into my own expectations for what I like or where I want the stories to go. “If it’s weird, it works” is my motto.

If there was no such category as monster erotica, what would you call your work?
Weird erotica. Either that or ELDRITCH SEXY-FUN TIMES.

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?
For me, it’s all about transgression. Sex should change you, as a person, as a sexual being. Reading about it should do the same, or at least get close to that transformative experience. So, I find regular smut boring. I can do that anytime, why would I want to read about it?

Favorite sexy beast?
Oh, I think I’ve gotta go with the Creature from the Black Lagoon here.

What else do you write?
Other than BLACKSTONE and the Lust Larvae books, not much, although I did recently dip a toe into the editing game with another Martian Migraine Press author. We put out an anthology of weird-erotica based on Lovecraft’s fertility deity, Shub-Niggurath. It was fun working with other writers and building a quality book. In the end it turned out being more horror than smut, but that’s probably for the best, as it’s doing pretty well on the Kindle, taking regular dips into the Top 50 in that category. It’s called Conqueror Womb: Lusty Tales of Shub-Niggurath, if you’re interested.

Kiss/kill/marry: Bigfoot, a Grey alien, the Loch Ness Monster
Ha! Oh, lessee here… actually, I think I’d keep those three in that order! Kiss Bigfoot, kill a Grey (because Communion scared the daylights outta me back in the day!) and marry Nessie. I have a thing for water beasties, I guess!

What’s the best writing advice you ever heard?
“Don’t listen to writing advice, just write.” I think writing is one of those things that, if you just keep doing it day in and day out, and are serious about honing your skills (and not just masturbating with a keyboard) then your writing will improve. It has to. We all know what’s good (in our own work, in the work of others) and we all can tell what’s crap when we read it, so if a writer does it every day, or as close to every day as they can, then yeah, the writing will improve.

Anything else you’d like to say?
Thanks for having me on your blog, Celia! This was fun! 🙂

Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Selena Storm

On #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Selena Storm.

Tell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!
Personally, I really love spooky ghosts more than anything. I’ve always been a conventional horror fan, and it’s a really good mashing of the two. All my monster books feature a horror element.

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?
I go with Monster Erotica. Beast Porn could be anything with an animal, including shifters. Monster Erotica is more concrete.

If there was no such category as monster erotica, what would you call your work?
Paranormal would probably be the best fit.

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?
It’s certainly the taboo element, it’s so wrong that it’s right. It’s also something you simply can’t get out of video porn, which is nice.

Favorite sexy beast?
As much as I love writing ghosts, gargoyles are probably my favorite. Cold, hulking stone creatures!

What else do you write?
My post popular genre, and one I have so much fun writing, is gender swap erotica. Men becoming women, women growing penises. It’s outlandish, it’s fun, it’s sexy.

Kiss/kill/marry: Bigfoot, a Grey alien, the Loch Ness Monster
I’d kiss Nessy, she seems sweet enough. I’d kill the alien, I’ve always had a phobia of aliens (I blame too much X-Files as a kid). Marry Bigfoot. I think he’d try to do right by me.

What’s the best writing advice you ever heard?
It’s cliche, but write every day. Not just for profit, but for yourself. Writing is a great mental escape.

Anything else you’d like to say?
For people thinking of getting in to writing erotica thinking it’s an easy, quick way to make a buck – you’re in for a surprise. This is my full time job and has taken me a long time just to make enough to barely scrape by. You won’t get rich quick, but it’s a great way to have a little extra money.

Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Shauna Michaels

On #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Shauna Michaels.

_Slaking_the_Giant_Ground_Sloth3Tell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!
Our stories are set in a sort of dystopian future where monsters and extinct beasts have repopulated the earth after a mass extinction event and the exodus of the wealthy. We’re building the world piece-meal as we go, but imagine the camp of Waterworld or Mad Max delivered in a tone that sounds like George R.R. Martin fan fiction, then graft on some seriously horny beasts, and you’re starting to get the picture.

As for the monsters themselves, so far we’ve published three stories. The first, Snowed in with the Yeti, is about a girl who accompanies her father on an expedition to find the yeti, only to end up lusting after the forbidden creature. The second, Taken by the Megalodon, features a woman out to revenge the death of her master at the hands of a Megalodon shifter, who proves to have a taste for heavy BDSM by the tale’s end. Our latest, Slaking the Giant Ground Sloth, is our first M/M story. It’s about a young man who must pass his village’s rite of passage, which involves “slaking” their guardian Megatherium. On the way his childhood friend gives him some lessons in loving. It’s Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” crossed with Christie Sims and Alara Branwen’s “Taken by the T-Rex,” but sleepier.

We have a lot more stories in the works, all of them in various stages of editing undress. Shauna’s currently drafting four tales that continue the story of Abigail and Haroon that began in Snowed in, and John is editing a story featuring a Kraken. Simmering in the files are stories involving all sorts of other beasts, including a snake-men novella and an epic bit of dragon erotica. Who knows when any of these will be done, though. Sometimes we think we’re too slow for the once-a-week pace of some of the highest selling monster-rutters. We both have day jobs and we both write other things, so the going’s slow. We do these stories for the pure fun thrill of it.

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?
“Monster erotica” suits us just fine. “Cryptozoological erotica” sounds like you’re trying way too hard to be professional and serious and forgetting the fun inherent in the genre. “Beast porn” sounds like it involves a camera or graphics program in some way. Unfortunately, a lot of the monster erotica we read for Monstertantra.com reads like it would have been better off as a video. Erotica to us should accomplish something else besides penetration. It should delve into characters and provide the sort of language play and imagery that grasp the reader’s imagination. There will be sex, of course, and hopefully it turns you on, but that’s not the only thing that should be happening in erotica.

If there was no such category as monster erotica, what would you call your work?
It would vary per story, probably, depending on the monster. Fantasy for dragons, horror for the Jersey Devil, Sci-fi for Grays. Often our stories, even those the two of us write outside of monster erotica, turn on premises, and those premises decide the stories’ shape, genre, and content. Categories’ main purpose seems to be marketing, and we try not to let it enter our drafting process. We try to just follow the story where it will go. Of course, that’s not entirely possible, because when you enter a story knowing it’s going to be “monster erotica” you know you’ve got to get some smut and some humor and some terror in there, or it just won’t fit the bill. We don’t truck in non-explicit monster erotica, so at some point there has to be an abnormally sized, throbbing sex organ.

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?
We started because the articles that made the viral rounds in the winter made the genre sound so profitable and fun. Maybe we haven’t written and published enough of it yet, or maybe we’re too slow, or maybe it’s just us, but it seems like there’s actually more money to be made in non-monster erotica, or even non-explicit indie publishing, especially with all the hidden filters that have been put in place. At least, we haven’t seen a ton of money yet. Some, but not a lot. It makes sense though. When you write monster erotica you set yourself two steps outside general fiction. First, the reader has to be interested in explicit erotica, and second, that reader has to be willing to read monster smut. If you’re writing strictly horror or sci-fi, where the dirty bits usually get glided over, you appeal to a larger fraction of the reading public. But who knows, maybe it will really take off for us at some point.

That’s just why we started though. Why do we keep doing it? One part stubbornness and seven parts enjoyment. We find the genre hilarious and thrilling, and it actually serves as a great testing ground for plotting, voices, and story shapes. The pressure always seems so low that when we go into one of these stories, we feel completely free and playful. That’s always a nice feeling, and if you can make a little money while doing it, well, hey, giddy-up alien cowboy.

Favorite sexy beast?
There’s so many to choose from, it hardly seems fair to pick just one. Gotta fuck ‘em all. At the moment it’s the giant ground sloth, the yeti, and the kraken, since those are the ones that we’re promoting, drafting, and editing stories about. But there are many more monsters we want to explore, and they’ll be our favorites next.

What else do you write?
It’s a secret! Our secret dream is to write and publish this our whole lives, and also write and publish other things, and then when we die have whoever has to execute our paltry estates discover we’ve been penning monster smut the whole time. Although, heaven help any children we may have.

But, in general, John veers more toward horror and sci-fi, and I veer more toward the “literary.” But we’re all over the place, and generally just try to work on whatever obsesses and enthralls us.

Kiss/kill/marry: Bigfoot, a Grey alien, the Loch Ness Monster
Kill the Loch Ness, kiss the Grey, and marry the Bigfoot.

The Loch Ness would make a terrible husband or wife, always lurking around blurry in photos, hiding out underwater, shirking its share of chores, being non-humanoid. A Grey’s a wanderer, a traveler, a space-vagabond. Rolling stones honor no wedding vows, but it sure feels nice to be rolled over one every now and again. Bigfoot though? He’s a misunderstood romantic, a great ape-man lumberjack with a full-body beard, and I bet he mates for life.

What’s the best writing advice you ever heard?
Not to listen to writing advice. When you’re writing you’re learning to channel a vision, to carry yourself and the reader from the first word to the last, and to make it pleasurable for the both of you in some way. There are best practices, things to keep in mind, and it’s good to learn some rules and think about them, but you must be willing to break them, especially once you’ve been writing for ten years like each of us has.

For example: lots of freshmen writing instructors tell you to avoid “to be” verbs. This is a great thing to try out as a writing exercise, and you certainly don’t want them in each and every sentence, and if they’re redundant you might want to cut them, but if you exclude them entirely from your fiction you’ll probably end up with stilted awkward nonsense. A plain and simple “is” or “was” or “are” here and there has a declarative authority to it that serves a real purpose. Denying yourself that tool is like saying you’re going to build a house but you refuse to use a hammer.

Anything else you’d like to say?
Only write in this genre, or in any genre, if you truly find it enjoyable in some way to do so. If you’re writing something solely to try to make money, it will show, and your stories will be lackluster. People might buy them, but your writing soul will slowly but surely shrivel.

Meet a Monster Erotica Author – Interview with Zara Zavaroni

On #MonsterMonday, this blog features interviews with the people who write and publish monster erotica. Why Is Monster Erotica So Popular? Well, we know! Today’s author is Zara Zavaroni.

Final CoverTell me about your stories and the monsters they feature!
So far I only have one creature feature under my belt – Lust & Loch Ness: Loving The Monster. It is the first story in a proposed series featuring the love between a woman and her Nessie.

I have a hundred and one story ideas racing through my head at any given time. Right now I have only written of Nessie and his lover. By this time next week I could have self-published a classic love story featuring a woman and a were-chicken.

What do you like to call your category? “Monster erotica”, “beast porn”, something else?
I prefer ‘Monster erotica’. For me, ‘beast porn’ sounds a bit too much like a Tijuana Donkey Show.

If there was no such category as monster erotica, what would you call your work?
Good question! I love the word ‘bizarre’. Maybe ‘Bizarre & Beastly’? We’re back in Tijuana Donkey Show territory again, aren’t we?

Why do you write and read monster erotica? What’s the appeal?
I think a quote from one of my favourite movies, Chasing Amy, best sums up my thoughts on why I write what I write and read what I read:

“Variety’s the spice of life. I like a wide selection. Sometimes I’m in the mood for nasty close-ups, sometimes I like them arty and air-brushed. Sometimes it’s a spread brown-eye kind of night, sometimes it’s girl-on-girl time. Sometimes a steamy letter will do, sometimes – not often, but sometimes – I like the idea of a chick with a horse.”

Of course, in my case, substitute ‘horse’ for Kraken, King Kong, or some such mythical beast!

Favorite sexy beast?
Godzilla! Okay, I will admit, he’s more cuddly than sexy. He would make you feel secure in those great big hands of his.

What else do you write?
I’ve only just started out self-publishing my short stories so there isn’t a lot of my work out there at the minute. With the exception of Lust & Loch Ness my most ‘out there’ story is a psychedelic erotica by the name of ‘Deflowered’. It revolves around a lonely young lady who wins a rather unusual bouquet of flowers at a fair.

My other stories are more conventional couples’ erotica pieces. The story I am most proud of is ‘Taken By Her Trainer’, a lesbian romance with a very steamy encounter in a sauna. Rowwrr!

I have a full length hardboiled detective erotica set in the Los Angeles porn scene that I’m working my way through slowly, but surely. I also have a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ style erotica in the works that I’m very excited about. It’s some way off being published however.

Kiss/kill/marry: Bigfoot, a Grey alien, the Loch Ness Monster
Kiss the Loch Ness Monster (that tongue!)

Kill Bigfoot (think of the rug you could make out of him!)

Marry a Grey Alien (the places he/she could take you!)

What’s the best writing advice you ever heard?
I’m martyr to procrastination. Chuck Palahniuk has some great advice on conquering this with what he calls his “egg timer method of writing”:

“When you don’t want to write, set an egg timer for one hour (or half hour) and sit down to write until the timer rings.  If you still hate writing, you’re free in an hour.  But usually, by the time that alarm rings, you’ll be so involved in your work, enjoying it so much, you’ll keep going. Instead of an egg timer, you can put a load of clothes in the washer or dryer and use them to time your work. Alternating the thoughtful task of writing with the mindless work of laundry or dish washing will give you the breaks you need for new ideas and insights to occur. If you don’t know what comes next in the story… clean your toilet. Change the bed sheets. For Christ sakes, dust the computer. A better idea will come.”

Anything else you’d like to say?
I love interacting with fans and fellow writers. I really appreciate this opportunity to reveal a bit more about myself and discuss my work. If the readers of your fine blog want to keep up-to-date on my writings, or just want to say ‘hello’, they can find me at the following wretched hives of scum and villainy:

About the Author

Zara Zavaroni has been writing erotic short stories sporadically for the last 10 years, but only self-publishing since March 2014. With 5 stories available so far, and 1,000 ideas whirling around inside, Zara constantly worries that she doesn’t write enough.
